[ Oh lord. What? Why? Thomas Jopson (blissfully unaware of Irving's circumstances, when the author is not) can only assume this is about him. So he stares. He considers ignoring it entirely, which would, of course, make response Irving's responsibility.
[ This would be the first of the messages of this type that he actually understands, but that makes it no easier. He's red in the face when he replies, how blessed is he that Jamie can't see it. ]
[He knows that Jopson is at a demonstration, so for now he avoids calling. But. Stephen is desperately curious and a little sulky that he wasn't invited. He's gotten over the latter, but he still wants to know what's going on.]
( Set sometime (a day or two??) after this thread. )
[ It's not at all premeditated, Irving's want to talk -- really talk -- with Jopson, as up to now he's had significant cause for wanting to hide rather than share.
Nothing personal, not really; it's a matter of shame, not trust. Irving does feel certain that Jopson would lose significant (if not all) respect for him if he knew about Irving's circumstances in any sort of detail, which frankly Irving wouldn't blame him for, either, as that's probably what he deserves.
All the same... detail or no detail, he does need to talk, he realizes this now, so it feels fortuitous when he arrives back to the flat one day with Jopson home already but Stephen (as far as Irving can tell) still out. Irving peels off the coat of one of his new work outfits -- having his own income, limited though it still is at the moment, has been at least one great source of relief to him -- and approaches Jopson only somewhat tentatively, since, Irving's own troubles aside, there's still been a fair amount of tension hanging between them ever since their slight row a week or so ago. ]
Thomas. Hello. [ He greets, to start with, but then gets right to it: ] Are you free to... talk, by any chance?
[ If he's being entirely honest with himself, he doesn't expect Irving to want to talk. He expects Irving to swallow whatever misery he's concocted for himself and stubbornly trudge through it like he's the one nailed to a cross. He doesn't fault John his stubbornness, Lord knows he has plenty of his own, but it's what he expects. That in itself has been a source of worry, as he occasionally came back to thinking about purgatory, and purpose. He should be helping John come to his senses, but he can't force a horse to drink, or a man to eat when he's dead set on starving.
It worries him. All of it. But then he's still unhappy about how the last conversation went, and they're both stubborn in their convictions.
When Irving finds him, Jopson is finishing off some ironing; never let it be said that he doesn't keep himself terribly busy. ]
DUPLICITY CITATION No. 18322 Violation: Public Disturbance Fine: $250 Payments must be received within 30 calendar days, or debts will be handed over to the Remittance Facility.
[ After their very public fight, which turned impressively nasty considering that were both still standing at the end, Jack spent the night with Irving in a hotel. It wasn't a sexy overnight stay, but long hours of talking, about their awkward predicament, about what happens next, big things and little things. It was kind of nice, despite the drama hovering over it.
But he can't let that storm rage on forever, not when he's unable to take Jopson's place in the event that they dissolve their contract. He sure as Hell doesn't want to ask Anne to host his annoying male lover for a second time, either. So, fully aware that it might be too soon and will likely be disastrous, he reaches out to Irving's Dominant. Via text, to start with, until he can be reasonably certain it's not going to be a fight again. ]
[ Of the messages he's hoping to get, this isn't one of them. He would rather not speak to this man in particular again, if he had the choice. Still, he's not so stubborn as to completely ignore an attempt at an olive branch, even while wary that it might actually be disguising thorns. ]
Not particularly, no. If you think you'll be able to honey your words with me like you've done him, you will find yourself mistaken.
[ Certainly a strange message to get out of the blue, especially given that he's just had a conversation with Billy for the first time in months. But, curious. ]
Good morning to you too. Is something the matter, Miss Morales-Kocchar?
[ It can only be said so many times how "texting" is not at all Irving's preferred medium of communication, but it also cannot be denied as an extraordinarily convenient one at certain times, in certain situations: the situation in this case being Irving currently babysitting comforting one Mr. Jack Rackham through a minor existential crisis brought upon by the recent arrival of Edward "Blackbeard" Teach... or as Jack would allege, a man who's claiming to be.
Irving, of course, has no way of knowing one way or the other, but as he heads out to go check on Jack, he still finds it prudent to discreetly send Jopson a text to inform him of the (potential) new development, bypassing his usually more formal greeting since he's texting as he walk: ]
You should know a man calling himself Blackbeard has just arrived.
[ Irving intends on treading very lightly here, very carefully, given how he and Jopson have certainly not had the easiest time of things so far here, constantly finding themselves clashing and butting heads with an increasingly troubling regularity, although they have also been... making someimprovement as of late. Overall they'll still most definitely have their work cut out for them as far as the bigger picture of improving their relationship goes, but the progress they've begun to make and show when it comes to communicating effectively with one another hasn't been insignificant, actually-- and in fact, that's why Irving is messaging Jopson now.
Progress or not, the subject of Jack Rackham will likely always be a tense one between them, but in the time Irving's both been becoming less guarded with Jopson, and more serious with Jack, it hasn't been lost on him entirely what a shame it would be (assuming he and Jack remain together; assuming things at least last a decently long while) if he could never talk about Jack to Jopson like a friend, a confidante, a brother.
Because yes, Irving struggles a great deal with opening up about his personal life, about intimacy, sex, love, and all the complicated emotions that he can't ever truly separate from those other things entirely, but as of late especially there have also been things he struggles even more with trying to handle or cope with all on his own-- to include this latest development he's tentatively planning on sharing with Jopson now. If nothing else, he'll at least be curious to see how it lands. ]
Jack moved Hickey out of his flat so that I could feel comfortable visiting him at home. He's even gotten a job. And all of it's already happened - it's done. Sorted.
I apologize for my abruptness Thomas but I just needed to share this with someone. I'm feeling quite overwhelmed at the moment.
[ This text is certainly a surprise. Not because Irving coming to him about Jack--no, Irving feeling awkward about it doesn't make it an uncommon or unexpected occurrence. Rather, it's Jack he's surprised by. The ellipses bounce for a few seconds, as Jopson considers what to say. ]
I'm happy for you, John. Truly I am. I can't imagine Mr. Hickey took it all well. What sort of job?
I feel as if I'm going mad Thomas. He keeps trying to demand we sail underneath a blessed BLACK FLAG of all things. And that's not all; I've sketched at least a dozen alternatives for us to design a New Flag with, as this Voyage obviously both Merits and deserves, and every single one he's managed to find fault with AND insult.
[ Enjoy this rare gift of "Irving venting about Jack to you," Jopson. It might not happen again, or often, but it's happening now! ]
It's Stress, I know it is, but some days it's just about all I can do to not feel tempted to slap that man silly. He can be so frustratingly stubborn sometimes.
[ This message is--a surprise, and fuck whatever he was doing before this, this is much more interesting (ironing, it's always ironing). ]
Well he is a pirate.
[ And we can all count our blessings that he has the dignity and discretion to not say "I told you so", but only just. ]
You're not going mad John, you can't really expect him to be decent about this sort of thing. I'm sure your designs have merit, you've an eye for a sketch.
[ Quite a few things go through Jopson's mind when he receives this message. Shock, Confusion, and Horror primarily, but he's no idiot, and can identify a mistake when he sees one. A sloppy, irresponsible mistake at that, given all that's happened with the Chevalier de Lorraine. He should leave it be, or correct Jack so he doesn't make the mistake again.
But he considers, just for a moment, playing along. He even starts typing something that he thinks might sound like John, just so he can find out more about their sex life out of sheer curiosity. He deletes it almost immediately, because it's a load of rubbish.
The cage is a surprise, but when he actually thinks about it (lord, now he's thinking about it) it's not the least out-of-character form of obscenity for John Irving to indulge in.
He sighs, and gives a neither here nor there response. If Jack realized he's made a mistake, all the better. If he doesn't, that's on him. ]

[ Jopson will only receive these messages once he's back within range of network service again and happens to check his device, each one pinging in direct sequence -- although they were neither written nor sent that way -- as they finally land in his inbox. Freed at last of limbo!! ]
[ A reply comes the morning after the kidnapped return to Duplicity. He hadn't even considered looking at his device until he'd gotten a good night's sleep, though now he's thinking that may have been a misjudgement. ]
[ Well, that certainly is a surprise. Two days later (if only because it must rely on the post), Dorian receives a handwritten letter. He has let the room spray from the care package mist onto the paper, so it smells (faintly) of lavender. ]
Dear Mister Dorian Pavus,
Thank you for your gift and for your kind words. They have all been well received, even though they did come as a surprise. We do what we must in hard times, as I know you understand.
I hope you are keeping well, and that I can repay your kindness in some way in the future.
( A gift is delivered mid-day on Christmas Eve, a box wrapped with a bow containing a silk cravat, a set of sleeve garters, and a note. The words are written perfectly, in the sender's best penmanship, straightforward and precise as Javert always is,
[ Jopson and Stephen both get generous packages of homemadecookies to share, but then have their respective gifts packaged separately. Jopson's gift is a handsome leather planner (which you can be certain is thorough as all get out) with his name embossed on the inside cover, and a fountain pen. Accompanying everything is a simple card: ]
To Thomas & Stephen, Merry Christmas. Your friend, John Irving (& Jack Rackham)
[On the evening of the 24th, a package is delivered to Jopson and Stephen's home. It contains a pair of cuffs made of sturdy but well-padded leather, in the same rich brown hue as Stephen's collar. It also contains a note written in a careful, rounded cursive.]
Dear Lieutenant, Mr. Day,
I wish to convey my thanks for your allowing me to attend your recent event. You have a lovely home, and the party was splendid. The pair of you clearly have a bond that was a privilege to witness and facilitate. I hope this gift isn't too presumptuous; it's intended simply to be another tool you can make use of and enjoy together. Perhaps we will see each other again around the city sometime soon. I should like that very much.
[ Oh this is charming. Jopson does appreciate a handwritten correspondence in this digital age. He writes one back in return. ]
Dear Mr. Grant,
Mr. Day and I thoroughly enjoyed your attendance. You made a most excellent first impression on us both, such that you are again welcome in our home at your pleasure. Thank you most sincerely for the gift, we have already taken a moment to enjoy it. We hope to hear from you again soon.
Yours with Esteem, Lieutenant Thomas Jopson
[ Attached is a printed photograph of only Stephen's hands, in the new cuffs, attached to the headboard. On the back, in the same penmanship: ]

Date: 2022-09-16 11:51 pm (UTC)My apologies for the delay, I needed to discuss with my submissive. As I've now had his blessing, I can say that I am still game.
If it's a matter of what I would like to see, I would like to see you behaving as you would do normally if I were not present.

Date: 2022-12-24 01:00 am (UTC)Dear Lieutenant, Mr. Day,
I wish to convey my thanks for your allowing me to attend your recent event.
Your obedient servant,
Steven Grant

Yours with Esteem,
Lieutenant Thomas Jopson
